hi everyone,

It pains me to see so many apparently educated, or should i say with certificates of education, persons say worthless things. in spite of such long and stellar history of critical thinking by humans, we still seem to lack it mostly.

To us, education is a step to employment and money. it's all good. but the primary aim of good education should be to help you think critically. not teach you what to think. and there we have failed miserably, at most of the places on Earth.

So it is no different when people try to explain how this new virus causing this epidemic came to being and blame china.

why it didn't come from india or any other place but China ! and then they launch themselves into all sorts of horrible stories of how Chinese people eat this and that.

please read this post on quora if you seek truth and  enlightenment. thanks...

food

also there are many other examples of communities eating raw or horrible looking food regularly..

they eat raw Caribou and its blood too. they eat fresh dog vomit. they eat spoiled egg....they eat....well

seek knowledge, please. not biased views.

Hello there everyone!

Now that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is on the line (its release is scheduled for the 23rd of April 2020), I decided to try out the beta out of curiosity. And what better testing candidate to try this on than my raspberry pi 4B with 4GB of RAM!

This post serves as both a tutorial but also more of a "timeline" for everything I did. So I wasn't sure which category to put this in. Admins, feel free to move this wherever you find to be the best category for this post.

Enough with the "briefing" and let's get straight into the fun shall we!

To begin with

I headed off to (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/...EADER.html) and downloaded the 64-bit ARM Ubuntu server 20.04 LTS image (yes, I said server... I'll get to that in a minute).

Next up

I decided to try out the raspberry pi foundation's new raspberry pi imager (usually, I'd just use balena etcher).

Now off to flashing the image to the microSD card

I went ahead and installed then launched the raspberry pi imager, where we'll have to choose the image and target microSD card

Click on "choose os"

Then "Use Custom" and a window will pop up where you have to choose the image we downloaded previously

Then click on "choose sd card"

And select your microSD card (which you obviously should've plugged into your computer by now)

Then click on "write" and let it do its thing

You will eventually get a pop-up saying that it's done

Next up

If you have the raspberry pi 4B 4GB RAM version (like I do), this step is for you. If yours is the 2GB or 1GB RAM model, then skip this step.

Due to a kernel bug, the current Ubuntu images for the raspberry pi only support 3GB of RAM max. If you decide to boot up now, you'll notice that your keyboard/mouse won't be working as this bug causes the usb ports to become useless. So w need to do one extra thing while our microSD card is still plugged into our computer.

You'll find a "system-boot" partition appearing as a plugged in usb drive. Open it and look for "usercfg.txt" and edit it (Notepad will do) and add the following line:

Terminal
total_mem=3072

Then save.

Now for the first boot up

Remove your microSD card from your card reader (hence your computer) and insert it into your raspberry pi and power it up.

Login with the default username "ubuntu" and password "ubuntu". It will then prompt you to choose a new password, do that.

If you're using ethernet, you should be connected to the internet without any extra input required from you. However, if you want to use wifi, you need to configure netplan for that. Not going to get into any details as there are tons of tutorials on that online.

Now run:

Terminal
sudo apt update

sudo apt upgrade

Next up

Remember how i said earlier that we're downloading the Ubuntu server image and not the desktop one? Well that is because there's no deskop image as of right now. But don't worry!

If you're looking for Ubuntu server 20.04 LTS, stop here. However, if you want Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 LTS, you need to run one last command:

Terminal
sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop

This will take some time so grab yourself a snack, sit back, and enjoy seeing your life fall apart in front of your very own eyes! Just kidding! It will take some time though... I wasn't kidding on that part.

Once it's done, you should simply reboot (I know I said the previous command was the last one... but do you really even consider a reboot command as a part of this? like come on!)

Terminal
sudo reboot now

You will eventually load up into a login GUI, where you simply click on the "ubuntu" user and type in your newly set password... then hit enter.

And oh look! A wild Desktop appeared!

That's about it!

You might be wondering: "Wait a minute, doesn't ikk157 always say he cant edit his posts and make them look good on mobile? Something seems a bit suspicious here!"

And you're right, I still can't efficiently edit posts on mobile. However, this one wasn't written from a mobile device. For a matter of fact, I'm actually writing and editing this from Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 LTS that I just installed on my 4GB RAM raspberry pi 4B! (No, my posts won't start looking like this as nothing beats the convenience of using the forum on the go on mobile.)

Hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed putting it together!

I found a alternative Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer client that is free. All you need is the freely available Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Dedicated Server from Steam and the IW5 Plutonium Launcher with an account on their forum.

1. Download the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Dedicated Server in Steam under the "Tools" category. It is absolutely legal and free.

2. Download the IW5 Plutonium Launcher and copy it somewhere. Download it link for the launcher: http://cdn.plutonium.pw/updater/plutonium.exe

3. Go to https://forum.plutonium.pw/ and register a free account as you will need one for the launcher.

4. Start the IW5 launcher and login with your forum account. Click on the setup button and enter the path to the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 folder in Steam - steamapps - common - Call of Duty Modern Warefare 3.

5. Click the play button. The game will start.

This is just a brief and quick how to use. Full instructions are here: https://forum.plutonium.pw/topic/531/how...5-launcher

Please read the full instructions! It has important information regarding false positive virus detection and etc. Also notes and links about most common bugs, errors and mistakes and how to fix them.

You can also even host your own server for IW5: https://forum.plutonium.pw/topic/582/lin...up-for-iw5

Are there any myBB users here who have struggled through myBB theme conflicts and can share their experiences here?  myBB is known for issues with conflict of theme particularly during upgrades.  Note: Please don't participate in this discussion if you haven't struggled with myBB upgrades before.

I attempted an installation of myBB once, and already during the installation I had a headache to use plugins with the installation as I kept running into conflicts between the theme I was using and myBB settings. I finally aborted my installation attempt but the lesson I learned was to only use up to date themes and plugins that list compatibility with myBB up to date version.   I know from another shared hosting site I'm staff at that the Tech Admin is ALWAYS hesitating before he runs a new update (thereby putting the Forum security at risk), as inevitably and ALWAYS we run into performance issues of the Board where he has to go into the theme templates and change and update settings over a period of time when they appear - as the issues are ALWAYS different from before. And those were really basic issues like members being unable to use the reply function for example. A Tech Admin has always got to budget the time he has available in order to take care of all the head aches that are guaranteed to follow after a myBB update.  That in its own right is a myBB security issue for me.

All Boards, including phpBB have issues with themes and plugins during updates, but it's as though myBB is a trifle more chaotic as there is very little guidance prior to the issue of the upgrade as to what conflicts there could potentially be.  Like mostly it's a hit and miss affair by myBB resulting in conflict comments that get submitted at the myBB Community Forum and then one has to make sense of all of the responses in the discussions that follow.

My last experience with a myBB upgrade was a change in the security settings resulting in a mismatch with the user's logon settings in ALL of the logon pages of the theme, so much so I was locked out.  So at least lesson number one is that if one is going to update myBB, one should universally change the theme to default first and disable the themes.  Then do some important fixes to the themes first before enabling them.  I guess most important is to plan for a maintenance day, work on all of the changes in the templates, warn members in advance, and afterwards seek their cooperation in providing feedback of conflicts for any further changes that have to be made to the theme templates.

I found this suggestion for how to fix the login authorization mismatch after an upgrade - it has to be applied to all of the templates with logins below:

* error_nopermission
* header_welcomeblock_guest
* member_login
* portal_welcome_guesttext

In addition, the author below has put together useful issues that may arise with a theme during a myBB upgrade to check up on:

@fChk  I think this may be a topic for you.

I don't want to be tracked on my SmartPhone.  And am completely prepared to downgrade to my old Nokia 1100.

I only upgraded to SmartPhone as when I was in Canada my Old Nokia G2 technology wasn't working there - anything under G4 has been discontinued a long time ago.  Even though this Old Nokia was fine in UAE, South Africa and the UK, it was as dead as a duck in North America.

Back in South Africa I sort of got into WhatsApp for family after years of resisting it like crazy.  However now with Corona Virus looks as though Government is messaging me every day.  Also, I find that with SmartPhone it takes more air time than it used to with my Nokia Phone.  Even with all of the options disabled including the BiG one for not using data, it's still using more air time than it did with the Nokia.

I'd like to know if I should move back to my old Nokia with the same SIM card, would they be able to track me similarly?

It's my Xperia X SmartPhone vs Nokia 1100 Cell Phone

Please note that Hostlease has advised that with effect of November this year that VPS 16 specs will be downgraded. VPS 16 specs are unrealistically high of course, and we are most grateful to @Pacific Spirit (Jordy) for sponsoring a huge VPS like VPS 16 for as long as he has been able to do.

VPS 16 Plan will stay the same until October of this year, after which it will be trimmed down to the size of VPS 17 or 18 Plans or in between.

VPSs 17 and 18 will continue indefinitely for now.  With no change to their specs.

CentOS 7/8 with XFCE & XRDP

Welcome to my brief installation guide for XRDP and the XFCE desktop environment on a CentOS 7 or 8 Core system ("Core" equals a command line system without a GUI). This guide has been made using two Hyper-V VMs running CentOS 7 and 8 Core minimal as their OSs in a local network environment. Thus both VMs didn't have a dedicated WAN address. This does differ greatly from a server with a dedicated WAN address in terms of the necessary changes to the firewall and port unlocking. When possible I will provide necessary commands that apply to the firewall on a server to unlock the right port(s).

Depending on the virtualization technology you are using you might not have a different experience. I'm not responsible for bricked systems. I recommend to perform this installation on a clean and up to date system.

Let's get started.

  1. Connect to your system and login as root or a user with sudo access. I'm using SSH to access my systems.

Please keep in mind: if you are logged in as a user with sudo access you will have to use sudo before any of the commands displayed below where necessary (e.g. when installing packages).

  2. Update your system to the latest version using the command below.

    Command
    Code:
    yum update -y

A personal recommendation: reboot your system after updating it to the latest versions to apply all changes and after that continue with the next step.

  3. Now we will perform the installation of XFCE. XFCE is not included in the CentOS software repos. Therefore we have to enable the included EPEL repos from Fedora to get XFCE and be able to install many other additional packages that aren't available in CentOS by default.

Enable the EPEL repos using this commands:
    Code:
    yum install -y epel-release
    yum update -y

Now install XFCE with all necessary packages using this command:
    Code:
    yum groupinstall -y "Xfce"

The download and installation of all packages will a take a bit. Let it run and wait for it to finish.

  4. At this point we're going to install the XRDP remote access system to be able to access our system via RDP.

Install XRDP using the commands below:
    Code:
    yum install -y xrdp
    systemctl enable xrdp
    systemctl start xrdp

On a server you need to open the RDP port using this commands:
    Code:
    firewall-cmd --add-port=3389/tcp --permanent
    firewall-cmd --reload

XRDP is now installed and running as a service.

  5. Now we need to create a configuration file for each user on your system that should be able to access the system via XRDP. This configuration file will tell the XRDP server what to do when the specific user connects to it. In this case it will launch the XFCE session.

Run this commands as every user that should be able to connect via XRDP:
    Code:
    echo "xfce4-session" > ~/.Xclients
    chmod a+x ~/.Xclients

Once that is done you can attempt to connect to your server with a RDP client.

  6. Start your RDP client ("Remote Desktop Connection" on Windows), enter the IP address of your system and hit enter to connect to your system.

When you get a security message regarding the server certificate simply tick the box to never ask about this again and confirm that you want to connect. I cannot provide a screenshot for this sadly as my OS is in Germany and not English.

  7. You will end up at the login screen of XRDP. There you have to login with the user information of a user on your system that is setup to login via XRDP.

Just type in the username and password.

    Screenshot
    [Image: b9WcGVO.png]

  8. You will now see a XFCE environment. At the first connection you will see a popup that will ask you how you want to initialize XFCE on your system. Click on "Use default panel".

    Screenshot
    [Image: yVLpwNn.png]

This will create a default XFCE configuration with a panel at the top and a quick launch bar at the bottom.

    Screenshot
    [Image: cipNt8d.png]

I noticed that on CentOS 8 you will not be asked how to initialize XFCE on your system. It will by default initalize XFCE with the default configuration. There is not a big difference. A newer XFCE version with a few changes in the UI.

    Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/XaGjbns.png

That's it folks. Now you have a CentOS 7 or 8 system with the XFCE desktop environment and you can connect to it using the RDP protocol and RDP clients that are usually all built into Windows by default already. A great RDP client for Linux is Remmina.
