This is not a tutorial, but could probably be used in that way.  It's a description of my experience today with loading a VERY OLD WordPress backup with the WP Duplicator plugin.

So today after @Pacific Spirits post about DirectAdmin I had to dig deep into my WordPress sites to find a blog I'd created for the Admin control experience of DirectAdmin.  That was an interesting exercise, as although I had backup, the backup was Duplicator backup, and my WordPress migration tool of choice had been WP All-in-One Migration tool for many years.  For me the faster the better, and the latter tool did that for me.  Also, why I had dropped Duplicator at one stage was because of how strict it is, and therefore easy to conflict with the server one is using it on - particularly VPS.  So I was wondering whether I'd get it to work for getting a VERY old backup (2016/2017) working again.

I thought that in preference to my VPSs that a cPanel such as at Gigarocket may have a better chance to succeed.  And it did work that way.  I then had to revisit a very old YouTube tutorial that I really like for brushing up on the Duplicator steps.  And was happy to discover it still existed at YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_conti...07RAt-IkMk

So one of the challenges we're having at Gigarocket is that our Softaculous installer has not been renewed.  Due to cost concerns of course.  So what's nice with Duplicator is that in contrast with the All-in-one Migration tool where you have to create a new WordPress Installation first, you don't need to load a WordPress installation before you load the backup with Duplicator - you only need to create a new database.  So in this case it was working better for me already.

The steps for Duplicator are very simple and easy:

1. Load the Duplicator Plugin on the WordPress Site that you want to migrate.
2. Then create a backup of your WordPress Site with the Duplicator tool:  it will create an installation page and a zipped package that one downloads to one's computer.
3. Then next you have to set up the new domain at the Destination Server.  Make sure the name servers have been changed.  Then check that the DNS has propagated before you migrate the site.
4. At the Destination Server you have to create a new database and new database user, set them up together with all privileges, and write down the password etc.
5. Then get the new domain url up, click on the installation linked file, and it will prompt you to installation of the backup.

So after doing this today, I'm wondering whether I should move back to Duplicator, as I am worried that the All-in-one WP Migration tool is not as safe as it should be.  Like maybe a more strict tool like duplicator would be safer.  Or better yet, maybe I can use both tools to have two sets of backups.  So if I have WordPress installation issues like at Gigarocket, then I can use Duplicator to create a WordPress installation without a WordPress Installer because there would be no need for installation of WordPress first.  And if I do have Softaculous, that would make WordPress installation easy, then the All-in-one tool maybe the better one to use.  Lots of options these days!  Tongue

Any way, I was very disappointed in the end, as although I had made a good start on finding a VPS to test DirectAdmin from an Admin side of things, I never actually loaded one, so I guess now that HostUS has offered VPS Holders with UK IPs a free DirectAdmin License, I've finally got my chance to try out DirectAdmin from the top down in Admin capacity. Looks like I'm going to learn some new lessons again soon, unless it irritates me too much - I may not have the same patience I had when I was learning how to use DirectAdmin from the user side of things.

As many people know that a lot of hosting providers have switched from cPanel to DirectAdmin or Plesk. I have checked many companies and they offered for changes to cPanel unlimited accounts for the resellers, since switching they now charge $ 0.75 per cpanel account. And they also moved to DirectAdmin. My personal opinion is that DirectAdmin is really a worthless control panel, but that is my opinion. I also tried DirectAdmin myself but the DirectAdmin did not work on the WHMCS due to an unknown error and / or reason. Which provider are you and do they still offer cPanel with an unlimited number of accounts or they now also ask you $ 0.75 for each account. Or are they balanced to DirectAdmin. Also tell us what you think of DirectAdmin and which you prefer, also useful for those who want to go back to cPanel from directadmin to recommend them a hosting company that offers cPanel. Are you comfortable with DirectAdmin, let me know what is better than in cPanel.

[Note: This thread had already been composer by me and saved in draft. But as @Kururin already mentioned it in @Gregol 's thread just for formality, this is an elaborative version of what he'd written]

Good news... Good news... Good news and even better news. So guys it'd been a very tough week as I'm preparing for my upcoming exams. Got some relief this Sunday otherwise I would have completed and published this thread earlier. I'm your Santa Claus for the day.. Thanks to GitHub!

So it happened that I was going through my GitHub Student Developer Pack offers a week ago. The first few offers were the usual ones I see. But while scrolling down, this caught my eye. There were around then new offers from various sponsors with whom GitHub had collaborated. Each offer was amazing in itself.

Among everything, I'd like to highlight this. As we all know, there was the NameCheap free .me domain offer already. NOW THERE ARE TWO MORE SUCH FREE DOMAIN OFFERS [b/]. They are from Name.com and Get.tech respectively. Both of them will now provide a year of free domain registration on eligible extensions. For Get.tech it's very obvious the extension is .tech . For Name.com here is the list of the [b]25 eligible extensions :

".BIKE
.CODES
.COMPANY
.COMPUTER
.CONSULTING
.DIGITAL
.EMAIL
.ENGINEER
.FAIL
.GAMES
.LIVE
.MEDIA
.NINJA
.ROCKS
.SOCIAL
.SOFTWARE
.STUDIO
.SYSTEMS
.TEAM
.TECHNOLOGY
.TOOLS
.VIDEO
.VISION
.WORKS
.WTF"

[Courtesy: https://www.name.com/partner/github-students]

So isn't this amazing! Three domains for a whole year, all for FREE. I bet you can't disagree.

In addition to this, there are a hell lot of other offers too. Another new one which I admire is the Terminus SSH Client for Desktop and Mobile. Anyways it's free for all, however, as a part of the GitHub Education Per
Programme we get ALL the features of the Terminus Pro Plan which costs $8.5 a month. That's till we remain a student.

Other new offers include PushBots, PomoDone, Phrase and lots more. See the full list here: https://education.github.com/pack/offers.

Personally, I'm very thankful to GitHub. The existing offers of AWS and Azure credits initially brought me into this VPS industry and enabled me to learn more about Linux Administration and eventually become proficient. This would have been otherwise impossible for me as I honestly cannot afford the prices for these services. A great thanks to GitHub from my side!

I'm sure all others involved with the GitHub Education Programme will after with me. Even if you're not, doesn't matter. No one can stop you from expressing your views. I've spoken enough about this - now it's your turn friends. Let me know what you think about this in the replies.

After my mistake on my VPS that requested @deanhills support I tried to emulate a OpenVZ environment on my local machine to figure out how get "Remote Desktop Access" technologies working on OpenVZ6.

My investigation started from the "workaround" provided by @"Hidden Refuge":

Issue: After installing a Desktop Environment the server will not survive the next reboot. I mean it will be unreachable (maybe stuck on booting), you can test it by pinging it: you will receive timeout.

Solution: Remove NetworkManager from the server immediately after the installation of the Desktop Environment.

What changes from the fix provided by @"Hidden Refuge" ? : Well, he named the use of SolusVM to reconfigure the network settings, instead on this attempt we will not need it. That means we can operate without creating troubles to the staff.

Step-by-Step guide to reproduce the fix, we will suppose the use of CentOS:
  1. Load on a VPS based on OpenVZ technology a template of CentOS 7
  2. Access to the container and set a root password:
    vzctl enter <ID>
    passwd root

  1. Access via SSH and make sure the system is up to date with:

    Code:
    yum update

  2. Enable epel repo

    Code:
    yum install epel-release -y

  3. Install a DE, we will suppose XFCE

    Code:
    yum groupinstall "Xfce" -y

  4. The following command didn't work for me (I had systemctl time out error), but try it:

    Code:
    systemctl mask NetworkManager

  5. Try uninstalling NetworkManager

    Code:
    yum remove NetworkManager

Now rebooting, the VPS should survive. To check if the workaround was successful you can try pinging the VPS. (When pinging you can get as first attempt timeout because the OS is still booting!)

I didn't want to try it directly on my VPS because I am scared to kill it again.

So, if a staff has some free time, can you test it on a actual VPS?
I just installed OpenVZ without any particular settings, I don't know if VPS providers uses magic settings.

As you can read from the thread's title, I have decided to start a series of "tutorial" regarding the setting up of a Ubuntu/CentOS Server from scratch. You can easily find the same type of topics on Internet but I can guarantee that these "guides" will be different: I will not give you "copy&paste" commands, I will try my best to explain what you are doing and why. My personal through is that a "tutorial" is made to share knowledge and not to be a one-time read article.

The purpose of this first thread called "Introduction" is to be a sort of "map" of this series, here you will find a linked list of the available/planned guides, so with this thread you will be able to "navigate" this series chapters but also suggest me new topics to study in deep. Thus, it would be nice if this thread got promoted to "sticky thread", what do you think about it, @deanhills ?

Before starting reading the tutorial, please read carefully this quote:
Hidden Refuge Wrote:I'm not responsible for bricked system. I recommend to perform this installation on a clean and update to date system. Fiddling around on a system that has been modified before is mostly a nightmare and almost always a guarantee for something to go really wrong.
**The OSes on which this series is based are: Ubuntu Server & CentOS on their "minimal edition". I will provide a schema of "version-based" command when needed.

The series will cover up the following topics:
  1. Enabling and setting up the Firewall with UFW (a simple wrapper for IPTABLES)
  2. Securing SSH
  3. Installing and setting up FTP - Coming soon
  4. FTP vs SFTP, setting up SFTP - Coming soon
  5. Installing and setting up a LEMP (Linux, Nginx (Engine-x), MySQL, PHP) environment
    1. Why Nginx? Installing and setting up (latest) Nginx - Coming soon
    2. Installing and setting up (latest) MariaDB - Coming soon
    3. Installing and setting up (latest) PHP-FPM with unix sock - Coming soon
  6. Installing and setting up Remote Desktop Access with x2go
  7. (DNS Management) A records vs CNAME records, using them to make a domain point a host - Coming soon
  8. Setting up a Let's Encrypt Certificate (Nginx settings) and Auto-renew WHEN USING CLOUDFLARE DNS - Coming soon
  9. Customizing Bash's prompt
  10. More in the future

This is a list of good & already existing tutorials by forum-mates that you can read as an extension:
Please read the following rules about this series:
  1. The only usage of Introduction thread is to: "comment the series", "request a particular topic", "give news about the on-going of the series";
  2. Questions and problems regarding a topic NEED TO BE POSTED on its dedicated thread;

Hey!

In this thread, we're going to learn how to install WordPress on your CentOS 7 machine. To do so, login to your server with your credentials using Putty or any other SSH client and follow the steps.

Step 1Installing LAMP Stack

Most of us would already know what LAMP stack is, for those who don't, it means "Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP". We must install them. Since it's an easy part, we'll skip. For those who don't know, they can follow up on the tutorial given at the end of the tutorial.

Step 2 - Creating MySQL Database & Configuring Proper permissions to it.
Before we start downloading and installing WordPress, we will need to create a MySQL database and configure it properly. To do so, login to your MySQL root user by using this command.

Code:
mysql -u root -p

Now when inside MySQL terminal, use the following commands to create user & database and assign proper permissions to each other.
Code:
mysql> CREATE DATABASE wordpress;
mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES on wordpress.* to 'wpuser'@'localhost' identified by 'your_password';
mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
mysql> exit

Note - Make sure 'wpuser' is edited with your desired username for WP's database username and 'wordpress' to be replaced as your desired name for the WP database.

After configuring it, restart it.
Code:
systemctl restart mariadb

Step 3 - Downloading & Installing WordPress

Download and unzip WP package into the proper directory. After that, make 'uploads' directory as it is not created by default.
Code:
wget http://wordpress.org/latest.zip
unzip -q latest.zip -d /var/www/html/
mkdir -p /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads
Assign proper permission to Apache to access WordPress directory and it's filed.

Code:
chown -R apache:apache /var/www/html/wordpress
chmod -R 755 /var/www/html/wordpress
chown -R :apache /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads

Now head over to WP's directory.

Code:
cd /var/www/html/wordpress/

By default, the 'wp-config.php' is named as 'wp-config-sample.php'. To configure WordPress, we need to rename it to its original name. To do so, write the following command.
Code:
mv wp-config-sample.php wp-config.php

Now let's edit 'wp-config.php' and put values according to what we've set in step 2.

Code:
nano wp-config.php

Now edit it accordingly. We'll put the default values we've used to create the database(according to step 2).

Code:
// ** MySQL settings - You can get this info from your web host ** //
/** The name of the database for WordPress */
define('DB_NAME', 'wordpress');

/** MySQL database username */
define('DB_USER', 'wpuser');

/** MySQL database password */
define('DB_PASSWORD', 'your_password');

/** MySQL hostname */
define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');
To save the file, press CTRL + X and then press “y” and it will ask you if you really want to save. Press ‘Enter’. In short, ‘CTRL + X > press y > press Enter’ and saved! Make sure you scroll down with arrow key and find these line and edit it accordingly and don’t touch other lines unless you completely know what you’re doing or it may result in errors.

Step 4 - Installing WordPress

To install WordPress after configuring it, go to http://your_ip_address/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php (replace your_ip_address with your server’s IP) and continue with the steps that WordPress instructs and you shall be able to completely work the way out of installing WordPress.
