As the title says I suggest to add new forums section. Why don't expand the sections?
- Scripting & Programming: Why can't we have a tutorial, users' projects, request for application, desktop development, web development sections?
- Software: Why we can't have review, spotlight, "I am looking for an application that..." sections?
- Web Design? Clear the section from "development-programming related post" by moving them on [Scripting & Programming]->Web Development and use it as a showcase sections of artistic things
- Hardware & Technology: Why can't we have a hardware review, technology spotlight, sections?
- Gaming: Why can't we have a review, spotlight, "share your clan" sections?

These are just few suggestions to improve the forum and add arguments that can be talked about. If you have other suggestions I will add them on post's head.
Vote the poll to let us know your opinion.

Hello everyone!

Welcome to my little info and discussion thread about the end of life for OpenVZ 6 and what this means for the OpenVZ 6 VPSs provided at Post4VPS by the sponsors.

Let me first list the VPSs here that are using OpenVZ 6:
  • VPS 3
  • VPS 7
  • VPS 9
  • VPS 11
  • VPS 12

Taken from https://post4vps.com/Announcement-VPS-Plans

In roughly 3+ months OpenVZ 6 (RHEL 6 based) will reach its end of life cycle (Nov 2019). This means that it will be no longer developed and updated by the OpenVZ developers. No bug fixes, no security updates and certainly no feature updates.

Reference: https://wiki.openvz.org/Releases

The OpenVZ 6 kernel 2.6.32 is a really old kernel although of course the OpenVZ developers have kept it somewhat up to date (however still lacking all features and bells of newer kernel versions). Pretty much all new Linux distributions are no longer supported by OpenVZ because of the kernel. Current working OSs are all almost also EOL (end of life).

Using OpenVZ 6 (still using it rather) is a rather dangerous venture nowadays. These days there are more and more security issues than in all the years before. Flaws in hardware that are hard to fix (Intel Spectre and other issues) and where even software fixes is workaround (if it is even available for the used OS!).

In my humble opinion every provider still using OpenVZ 6 should be long moving over to either OpenVZ 7 or a different virtualization like KVM, XEN or similar (something that is of course still being maintained and supported). However you as a user should also take precaution and prepare to move over to better solutions. I recommend KVM because hardware virtualization is simply better than software nowadays (my two cents).

What does all of this mean for Post4VPS? Will sponsors drop VPSs running OpenVZ 6? Will the eventually replace them with something better? Or will the worst happen and they will continue using a dead technology and risk to get hacked? What will you do?

P.S.: You probably should be concerned.

Share your thoughts, concerns and ideas. Please be serious and if you don't really have anything to contribute don't post. We have enough low quality posts these days already.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hello everyone,

today i had this idea while i was talking to HR on the matter of spammy posting.

How about making a special counter that only counts and uniformly scores a post if it gets atleast one upvote from staff or sponsor (3 from normal users might be another way to promote).

It could be used as a veto power by a staff/sponsor only to give a new but very good user a better spec vps from the pool sooner. The giveaway manager himself could exercise that power too.

I think this would go a long way in solving the problem of huge amassed score over a long time mostly accumulated by lazy posting.

i really like all the systems already in place to discourage rampant spamming. I think this would greatly add to that existing mechanism set in place by our cool admin Dynamo.

What  do you say ?

I've come across at least two instances of WordPress plugin attacks at another hosting Forum that fortunately were picked up by our server security filters and led to instant suspension of the sites.  Otherwise it may have led to warnings to our Datacentre and possible blacklisting of our IP.  Then today I found a really great blog article from WordFence that explains what must have happened.  WordFence, a WordPress Security Specialist identified and is tracking an active attack campaign targeting a selection of new and old WordPress plugin vulnerabilities.  The one I came across at the other hosting Forum was Contact Form 7 for example.  Those attacks maliciously redirect traffic from the victims' sites to a number of potentially harmful locations.  It's a real sad situation for users who used to be able to run WordPress sites in reasonable safety.  It's no longer safe to have a WordPress site UNLESS you know what you are doing, are completely up to date with every plugin and theme in your site, and have proper security tools such as WordFence as part of your site.

You can read more about the WordFence blog article at the URL below:
https://www.wordfence.com/blog/2019/08/m...l-plugins/

Interesting part of the article is the behaviour analysis of the exploits.  The attackers rotate their domains with frequency with new domains appearing every few days, and attacks involving older domains taper off.  The examples given in the article are just the examples WordFence has been tracking.  I could probably provide WordFence with more examples.  Although I'm a bit too exhausted to do that.  For me however the sophistication with which WordPress is being manipulated is so complex and threatening, I'm definitely going to think of new ways to publish blogs.  I still have to start with this.  OR one should only use VERY reliable plugins that are regularly updated and tested, and as few as possible.  And of course have WordFence as a plugin as well.

Another interesting fact that came out for me during an experience with Contabo was that these guys are masters at manipulating IPs from different servers.  Like with the old IP I had at Contabo, even with me being the owner, there were four other active domains registered with my IP number as active Websites - Namecheap was the Registrar.  So basically if they had been used as part of the attack, then blacklisting systems would have immediately connected them up with the Contabo IP and those domains being situated on the VPS, which they had not been, and I don't have a real idea how that came about.

Maybe it's as simple as that when a Registrar allows a person to add name servers to a domain, there is no real authentication to make sure that the name servers point to a legitimate site.  It can really point anywhere, including the victim's site that they have managed to infiltrate.  So maybe some of this is the fault of Domain Registrars?  They have domains listed with IPs that aren't really associated with the domains.  Possibly there should be a new system created where if one adds one's name servers, there needs to be a verification of exactly what IP is associated with the name server to make sure it's not being used by rogue malicious attackers.

As the title says, it would be nice to have a sort of IP address for each VPS (sponsor/provider) to ping and to check the latency you can except for the VPS.
This idea comes from my thread regarding VPS Location and thanks to @deanhills with his message:
Quote:Usually when I check a VPS out before I apply for it in a Giveaway, I check whether there is a mirror service on the sponsor's Website, that would provide you with a test IP.  You then use your computer to Ping that IP to see how fast your ISP works with the ISP.  Sometimes you may find even though the location of the test IP is closer to your ISP physical destination, that it may be slower than another location because of the network and how the ISP is sending its packets or the other way round.
What do you think? Would it be useful?
Vote the pool and let us know your opinion!

Hello Friends, I am new in the linux world. I don’t know much about Linux packages and other applications. I have a blog hosted on my VPS. A few days ago I wanted to migrate to a new VPS. I searched google about the transfer web from one host to a new one. I found some but failed to transfer with those methods. In searching, I found information that we need to export our database and directory and transfer it to a new host. I transferred my website successfully to a new host. I am going to share the method I used to transfer.
First of all, you need to export your website database. You can export it via Phpmyadmin. Actually, I don’t use Phpmyadmin so I export/import database via Terminal.
If you have Phpmyadmin export it. If you don’t, use the following method to export the database.

Database Export via Terminal

Code:
mysqldump -u [username] -p [database name] > [database name].sql

The exported file can be downloaded from the root folder or the user folder you are logged in.

First of all, go check if the database is exported or not. After confirmation download it to your PC.

The database backup is completed now. Lets back up the website directory. The directory has a high file size. Downloading it via SFTP client is very difficult so I use a different method. I use Google Drive. I will zip the directory and upload it to google drive.
We need to install google drive.

First of go to the root directory with the following command

Code:
cd ~

Now download the google drive

Code:
wget https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B3X9GlR6EmbnWksyTEtCM0VfaFE&export=download

After the download is completed we will rename the downloaded file. Use the following command to rename the downloaded file.
The downloaded file will have the name “ uc\?id\=0B3X9GlR6EmbnWksyTEtCM0VfaFE “

Code:
mv uc\?id\=0B3X9GlR6EmbnWksyTEtCM0VfaFE gdrive

We have renamed the file. Let's give the execution permission

Code:
chmod +x gdrive

Now we have to install this to our usr directory. Use the following command to install.

Code:
sudo install gdrive /usr/local/bin/gdrive

During this installation, we will have to provide our google email. It will also require email confirmation. The terminal will give us a link, we will have to allow the application to access our google drive account.

We are done, the installation of google drive is completed.

Let's compress the website directory.

If you don’t have already installed zip install it first.

Code:
zip  -r filename.zip /path/folder

The compressed file is stored in the same directory or the user directory you are logged in. Now we will upload this zip file to our google drive.

Use the command gdrive upload to upload the file.

Code:
gdrive upload filename.zip

The file will be uploaded to your google drive account. Now let's restore it to our new host.

Logout of your terminal and login to your new host.

First of all, we will restore our database. I use the terminal to restore but you can also restore it with Phpmyadmin.

I use the terminal to restore the database.

First of all login to your MySQL and create a new database with the following command.

Code:
CREATE DATABASE newdb;

After creating log out of your MySQL with the simple exit command. Now upload the downloaded .sql database file to the root directory using a SFTP client.

Use the following command to restore the database

Code:
mysqldump -u [username] -p [database name] < [database name].sql

Database restore is completed now let's restore our website directory.
Download the file we uploaded on google drive and unzip it.
There are two methods to download the file from google drive, you can not directly download from google drive. If you want to download you need to install gdrive on your new host. There is an alternate method, I uses.
The method I use is to move zip file from google drive to MediaFire is MultCloud. It is very easy to move your files to mediafire from google drive. But it may be risky. So do it on your own risk. Register at MuliCloud and add your google drive and mediafire account to share files. I simply share my .zip file to mediafire account and download it with the simple command

Code:
wget https://mediafire.com/example.zip
After downloading move your file to /var/www/ and unzip using the command

Code:
unzip example.zip

We have successfully transferred our website files and database to the new host. Now you just have to edit your website configuration and set its DocumentRoot and enable your site.
Most of the webmaster's know about the Apache site configuration but here is simple information for those who are a newbie.

The website configuration file is stored in " /etc/apache2/sites-available "
So you will have to be in the directory, use

Code:
cd /etc/apache2/sites-available

Here you will have to create a new configuration file. Simply use the nano command to create a new .conf file.

Code:
nano mysite.conf

and paste the following code, save and exit.
Code:
<VirtualHost *:80>
   ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
   ServerName yourdomain.ext
   ServerAlias www.yourdomain.ext
DocumentRoot /var/www/example    ( Update this to the directory we have downloaded )
   ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log
   CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined
</VirtualHost>

Now we have to enable our website use

Code:
a2ensite mysite

If you have any question feel free to ask.

Thanks

regards

Rehan

What exactly is WireGuard (from the WireGuard homepage):
https://www.wireguard.com/ Wrote:WireGuard is an extremely simple yet fast and modern VPN that utilizes state-of-the-art cryptography. It aims to be faster, simpler, leaner, and more useful than IPsec, while avoiding the massive headache. It intends to be considerably more performant than OpenVPN. WireGuard is designed as a general purpose VPN for running on embedded interfaces and super computers alike, fit for many different circumstances. Initially released for the Linux kernel, it is now cross-platform (Windows, macOS, BSD, iOS, Android) and widely deployable. It is currently under heavy development, but already it might be regarded as the most secure, easiest to use, and simplest VPN solution in the industry.

WireGuard was a new VPN technology I have always wanted to try since I first heard about it. This was when it was still in early development and not being even available as a alpha or beta... far from ready for release.

Some time later WireGuard has finally reached a state where the developers decided it was ready for release. So WireGuard VPN was finally launched. As always, with new technologies you have to learn new things. How it works, how to set it up, how to troubleshoot issues and etc. We all know how it is.

Being busy I didn't really have time for all of this so I didn't really touch WireGuard. Once I was actually almost about to make a tutorial here but as it comes... something more important prevented me from doing the guide. With my job now going fully blown I have even less free time.

I did some research and found a setup script that will set up a WireGuard VPN server on your server and create a client configuration file for you. The script has been developed by a member of the LowEndTalk forums known as Angristan. He made it available for use at GitHub with instructions.

URL: https://github.com/angristan/wireguard-install

I finally used this due to lack of time to setup my own server step by step. Now I have a working WireGuard VPN server. WireGuard feels refreshing and snappy compared to all previous VPN solutions I tried. Give it a go.

Warning: WireGuard is becoming a part of the Linux kernel when you install it to get all the performance out of the server that it can and to make use of the full network stack to make the VPN mechanism easier and more secure. You need to be able to modify the Linux kernel of your server to use WireGuard. So OpenVZ VPSs are OUT! You need a Hyper-V, KVM, VMWare or Xen-HVM server or a real dedicated server.

As a good and alternative WireGuard client with a killswitch and other functions I can recommend TunSafe: https://tunsafe.com/

I'm using this and it works great. The killswitch is a great feature if you want to prevent network leaks when for some reason the VPN disconnects.

So, let's make a brother of this interesting thread .
Tell us what is/are your favourite web programming language(s) and, if you want, the reasons.
Speaking about web-development we can't not talk about a very important thing:
  • Are you a front-end dude?
  • Are you a back-end dude?
  • Are you a semi-god full-stack dude?
For this interesting thing I have set up a poll, so we can see which position is more popular.

I have opened this thread, so I have to be the first one.
I started my web-dev experience not so long ago but I will be frank: I am a back-end dude because I am naturally unable to perform artistic things: I am unable to produce any form of art with my own hand. I have this incompatibility since my school days: during art subjects my draws weren't so good.
A sort of exception art I am good at, or if I can say I excel in it, is technical drawing: I love hand drawing sections of item, 3D drawing, floors, building; I am also in love with CAD software for digital drawing.

Now you can understand why I am a back-end dude. If you try to combine me and CSS you will get a 1990 website style, I know few CSS and JS tricks but I can't call myself a front-end. I am unable to create nice UI.

So I prefer back-end & script languages such as PHP, JS, Python, ASP.NET and DB stuff of course.
Speaking of PHP, I am loving Laravel framework. And I like the recent news of P++ (read my post about it, if you missed it!)

Hello everyone,

This post is regarding the thread https://post4vps.com/Thread-Free-Hosting-Unlimited. It had been closed by @deanhills and deleted of late after I informed him something about it. The website's link that the person provided was a ByetHost Reseller. As you all might know, ByetHost is blacklisted at Post4VPS - https://post4vps.com/Thread-Advertisement-Rules. This means that advertising the free hosting service of ByetHost or it's resellers here on this forum will attract zero tolerance.

Not only was that website in Vietnamese, but I can tell by the make of that website that it is a ByetHost reseller. This is because I myself own a ByetHost Reseller (I won't post the link coz as I had said earlier, it is against the forum rules). I have a good experience at customizing the default themes of the ByetHost reseller so I am quite used to it.

This thread is not only aimed at informing this to you all, but I would also like to know your opinion of ByetHost and it's resellers. Do you think they are worth the services that they provide? I do not think so. You just can not add an SSL certificate to your site unless you link it with Cloudflare. You also can't change any DNS records for your site except CNAME, MX, and SPF. You have a hell lot of restrictions. This is pretty much annoying. I do not know how many of you might agree with me, but I recommend using HelioHost or GigaRocket Hosting wherein you can have every feature enabled on Free Hosting.

Let me know your thoughts on this matter.

Regards,
