I don't know Kimsufi at all - just know someone who has managed to negotiate really low cost dedicated server deals from them from time to time - and then when I checked them out yesterday noticed they have a special offer on for SSD VPSs with locations in England, France, Germany, Poland and the US.  They're based in England with focus mostly on Europe.

Kimsufi deals in OVH servers, however along discount lines - so one would need to be able to support one's own server as they're more focused on bulk sales - or that's what my impression is anyway - it may be wrong.  You can read more about the company here:

The VPS that I thought looked interesting has the following specifications with locations in England, France, Germany, Poland and the US.  Focus is obviously in Europe and in England.

I wasn't able to find a Terms and Conditions of Hosting anywhere.

Step 1:  Navigate to the link below and download PuttyGen for either 32 or 64 bit VPS

Step 2:  Create a Keys Folder in a safe area of your computer and move the puttygen.exe file into the Keys Folder


Step 3:  Open the puttygen.exe file as indicated below and generate a Private.ppk key





Step4:  Save the private.ppk file to the Keys Folder as indicated below.


Step 5:  Copy the contents of the Public Key below to the clipboard/notepad



Step 6: Access your VPS with SSH to add the PuttyGen Key with the following commands
mkdir ~/.ssh
touch ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
chmod 700 ~/.ssh
nano ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
paste the contents of the public key that you copied before to notepad to the 'authorized' keys file
ctrl x to exit and accept and ctrl y

Check that you have made the change to the authorized keys successfully and it now contains your private key. Then exit the VPS.

Step 8: Open up your Putty Again and load your VPS as with the diagram below.



Step 9: Click on the SSH link in the left column below and then select 'auth'.  Use the "browse" tool to
select the private.ppk file in your Keys Folder.



Step 10: Open the VPS

Step 11:  Once you've checked that the keys are working you can now disallow password authentication:



Search with ctrl + w  passwordauthentication yes
Change it to 'no'
Then exit with ctrl+x and y

Check that the change has been made successfully with nano

Now check whether you can access root with a password.  You should not be able to do so.

Step 1  Choose a random number between 49152 and 65535

Step 2  SSH into your VPS - if you don't have NANO already loaded with CentoS - you can do it with this command:


Step 3 Use this command to edit the port number


With nano you'll be able to scroll with your up and down keys to:

#Server 22

Delete # and replace 22 with your random number.  Remember to make a note of the new number.


Step 4 Save the change with 'ctrl o'  and exit with 'ctrl exit'

ctrl exit

Step 5 Change IP tables (replace "newnumber" with your new port number):




If you have a Panel, you also need to go into the Panel and in the case of VestaCP there was a separate setting for Firewall SSH port number - which I changed from 22 to my new number.  I also had other issues with VestaCP which I reported in the last post of this tutorial.  VestaCP is still far from perfect, but I think it could possibly also be because of CentOS 7 (probbly still prefer CentOS 6) -  VestaCP httpd and nginx have error issues that come up when ports are changed over and above the ones that have been covered above that come up with this message - resulting in one can't restart either httpd or nginx and websites of course are down as a result:

Feedback:  After the change of the port number I had no more bad login attempts.  This really works well.

After a bit of a struggle to sort out the bad login attempts of my HostUS VPS - including reinstalling my OS and having to redo all of my Websites tomorrow again - am quite happy now. The speed really looks great!
